The 'Scottish Play' is one of Shakespeare's best-known works. Betrayal, jealousy and lust for power all contribute to one of the most powerfully dark plays ever written. The Young Rep brought William Shakespeare's enduring tragedy to the main stage of the Swan Theatre to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Worcester Repertory Company.
The brutal aftermath of civilisation’s collapse propels Macbeth towards an ill-fated destiny as he struggles to survive against dark forces intent on bringing about his downfall. His life is altered in a split second of disturbing prophecy as Lady Macbeth drives him further towards his inescapable end.
Set in a bleak, dystopian world where the fight for survival is a constant one, director Ben Humphrey brought Shakespeare’s psychological masterpiece to life with an award-winning creative team and the incredible company of young actors.
The production was highly critically acclaimed and launched the Young Rep as the "...future of theatre." (Worcester News)

REVIEWS

THE concept of Ben Humphrey’s new company, The Young Rep, is to bring on the next generation of theatre-makers by giving them access to professional standard performance and creative opportunities. The company’s inaugural production, Macbeth, certainly delivered. From the moment one walks through the auditorium doors Dominic Beale’s movie-like soundscape plays tricks with our minds, and Jack Coleman’s seamless lighting design prepares the audience for the full force of the young company’s might.... Worcester News Review

Ben Humphrey deserves huge praise for his vision and direction, but of course it is the inspirational young cast and crew who served up what was a powerful and gripping drama. Those responsible for set, lighting, sound and costume did a brilliant job. Those on stage performed with confidence and an understanding beyond their years. This was an ensemble piece so it would be wrong to pick out names for particular praise but many of the memorable scenes revolved around the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as the balance between then shifted and deteriorated and they both turned in thoughtful and committed performances. The witches had amazing presence as they emerged from the ground, often moving & speaking in unison. A great theatrical treat for those lucky enough to see this production and a wonderful advert for the future of live theatre from the next generation. Huge congratulations to all.
