The Young Rep will make their debut at the Swan Theatre this March. We take a look at the impact on the industry of connecting young people in theatre with professionals and how it can improve the experience of live theatre for everyone involved.
The Young Rep are in the final stages of rehearsal for their debut at the Swan Theatre and as the young company stare along the home-straight they are beginning to feel a part of something very special. The Young Rep was formed to celebrate the link between the Worcester Repertory Company (celebrating their 50th Anniversary this season) and the Swan Youth Theatre, who have been a part of the fabric of the Swan Theatre since it opened in 1965. For fifty years there has been an inspiring link between the two and it remains stronger than ever in 2018.

Founder of the Swan Theatre, ‘Dame’ Sarah Knight MBE, put young people at the front of her theatrical endeavors and there are still professional actors, stage-managers, designers and directors working today who credit her with providing the kindling to their professional fires. John Hole, Michael Winter, Paddy Masefield OBE, John Doyle, John Ginman, Pat Trueman and Jenny Stephens are often thought of in the same way, as are many of the directors who have called the Worcester Rep and Swan their home over the years. The connections that young people make in theatre can last a lifetime and it is through those connections that the next generations of theatre makers are then given the confidence and the support network to move on into the wider industry.
The members of the Young Rep are acutely aware that they are part of half a century of creating theatre. They know that they stand on the shoulders of giants as they take to the stage where countless others have stood before them. They take a great pride in being able to say that they are a part of something bigger than themselves, something that will hopefully be here in another fifty years time and something that will inspire the generations after them to continue to tell stories and create theatre.
Come and see their debut production, Macbeth, and be a part of that history.
Macbeth runs from the 6th - 10th March 2018 at the Swan Theatre, Worcester.
