The Writing Life According to...

With Dr Charley Barnes

Online Workshop

In this one-hour session we will spend time looking at the creative process, according to canonical and iconic authors. We will consider the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Mary Oliver, and Margaret Atwood, looking at their advice to aspiring and inspired writers for creative living.

Is there such thing as writer's block?

Online Workshop

In this one-hour session we will look at the historical documentation of writer’s block, according to some of the great authors. We will also look at a range of techniques for overcoming both writer’s block and, its cousin, editor’s block, to try to pave the way for a smoother creative journey.

Planning, plotting, pulling things together.

11am - 12noon (Zoom room will open from 10:50am)

Online Workshop

In this one-hour session we will look at the different ways of plotting long-form fiction. The two most common expressions associated with this are ‘plotting’ and ‘pantsing’ (meaning, to write by the seat of your pants). We will look at the advantages and disadvantages of both styles, and consider how this might change from one project to another.

Creating characters to carry a story.

Online Workshop

In this one-hour session we will look at the ways in which you can put together a convincing cast of characters for long-form fiction. We will consider the challenges of writing the hero and the anti-hero, and the ways in which we can make our characters more human and therefore more emotionally authentic for our readers.
